Authentic Mexican food is not one of DC's strengths, but José Andrés does it justice at Penn Quarter's Oyamel ? with, of course, the chef's signature twists. [Eater 38 Member]
A combination of traditional Mexican flavors with a modern twist, José Andrés' restaurant in DC is the perfect place to sample some mescal.
Try the grasshopper tacos. I'm not even kidding. Never had them before and they were DELICIOUS. I'm a total convert.
Oyamel can be a bit chaotic, but that's ok. Plates are tapas style which is lucky, because there are so many things on the menu you're going to want. Try the sopes de chorizo con papas.
Must try: guac served tableside. So fresh and yummy!
Stanley and Eric are the best hosts during lunch- always make me feel welcome
Guac is expensive, but worth every penny!
You must order the guacamole! It's delicious & made right at the table.
Be nice to the food runners. The kitchens downstairs meaning they have to run up and down stairs all day with trays full of food. Glutes of steal though.
Go to the ceviche bar and ask for Jason. His hands have been touched by the sushi gods.
