I was also disappointed. Maybe the hype built up my expectations, but I found the ribs to be dried out and cold. The flavor of the ribs are good and the atmosphere is pretty cool, but the ribs were a bit of a let down.
Hands down, the best BBQ in the country! So juicy and flavorful, BBQ sauce is not needed! This is the quintessential NC style BBQ. Be sure to stop here-if it's too busy, head down the street to Smokey Joe's BBQ as it is the same style of deliciousness!
Didn't try the wing challenge, but did get wings. They were "ok", nothing special. Atmosphere is great, but what I had was not worth another trip there.
Tried the Fried Chicken as recommended on Man vs. Food. Chicken was moist, with a hint of crunch to the skin, but it was outshown by the fried okra! Amazing okra! Apple butter was also very tasty on the homemade bread. But the highlight to the meal was the pie...Chocolate/Peanut Butter pie was delicious! Best no bake pie I have ever had!
The place is TINY and since being on tv is CROWDED. Expect a 45-60 minute wait...but well worth it. I had the parmesan meatball sandwich and it was terrific! No crazy toppings on this sandwich, but it is definitely worth the trip. The "spuds" are also fantastic! Others in our group got a Caesar wrap, The Fat Sandy, and a quesadilla...all were satisfied with their food and full! Be sure to allow yourself about two hours to eat here as it is crowded, or, you can call in your order and pick up like the smart folks who kept coming in while we waited.
I love this place. While the BBQ is not the best I have ever had, it is really good BBQ, the sides are amazing (specifically the corn nuggets), the hash is like nothing you will find anywhere else...and did I mention it's all you can eat?! The family who owns this restaurant also owns several other Duke's BBQ's in the area and if you are near any of the locations, you will want to stop in! One important tip: wear your stretchy pants.
